I recently consulted a patient who had significant hearing loss, on hearing device options. She was cautious, and mid-consult, paused and asked me this question: “But what if they work too well? What if my brain gets used to them and I can’t hear without them?” We discussed this question at great length.
After she left, I reflected on our visit, and how fearful she was that things might actually go the *right* way. It is interesting to understand that sometimes, as humans, we are more comfortable with a disappointing outcome than a positive one; that perhaps we have to be let down numerous times and are used to that being the case. But oh, the possibility of things working out and having hope- that’s a bit scary.
I get it.
Being hopeful involves being a bit more brave than we were the moment before this current one.
My wish for her, as her audiologist and fellow human being, is that she remains curious, hopeful, and brave. I am excited for her hearing journey and here for it- to walk that path alongside her and witness the magic unfold.
Wherever you are in life’s journey and difficult decisions, my wish for you too, is to stay brave, friends.
